St Francis loved the Portiuncula more than any other place and asked the friars never to leave it. Obedient to his wish, we still guard this shrine so dear to you today. Our presence in the Portiuncula, the place of the origins of the Franciscan Order and of the death of the poverello of Assisi, helps the millions of pilgrims who pass by this little church every year or follow the celebrations from home, to experience the same grace that Francis experienced in this place. St Francis’ wish is that the Portiuncula be for you the same place of grace that it was for him. Our constant presence, the care of the place and the many services offered, express our desire to meet you and be for you an instrument of this grace.
